Custom iMessage tones for iPad 1

I just realized that you can not set specific message tones on the iPad 1, I understand the ringtone being absent since FaceTime is not on the iPad 1, but it has iMessage so shouldn't I be able to set specific text tones for each contact like I can do on my iPad 2 and my iPhone?  Weird that Apple has blocked this, I am still able to add custom text message tones, I just can not add custom tones for certain contacts.
