Not much has changed in the iPad as far as saving battery life, these tips have been around a while and apply to most all iOS devices.
* Turn off the Bluetooth when you are not using it.
* Turn off push email, if you don't need push select "manually".
* Turn down the screen brightness, especially with the Retina display, this will help a ton, I keep mine on 50% and disable auto-brightness.
* Limit the apps that use location services, if they do not need location services disable it within the app.
* Limit the apps that use notifications, Twitter is a killer for this, but other apps as well.
* Turn on your iPad’s auto-lock.
All these settings can be adjusted within the "Settings" app you will find on your iPad's home screen (default). I have noticed that the iPad (3) battery drains at a tad faster rate than the iPad 2, it also takes quite a bit longer to charge as the battery is much larger.

iPad battery test
I saw a post online about the iPad charging faster while it was powered off vs. charging it while it was powered on but in “sleep mode”. What I found out was that it did not make much of a difference, the iPad did not charge any faster powered off vs. powered on.
It was a fun little test, below is a chart I whipped up showing the difference between being powered on vs. powered off:
( 0-100 is the battery percentage )

It took a total of 6 hours and 6 minutes to go from 1% battery life to 100% battery life while powered off, I did not continue to test to see how long it took while powered on, I stopped after the timer reached 6 hours and 6 minutes. The iPad was at 98% when I stopped the clock.
