Sync music from iTunes to your iPad

A quick iPad tip showing how to sync music to your iPad or remove music that you currently have on your iPad and replaced it with music that you do not have on your iPad but do have in iTunes on my computer.

I know that Apple has tried to make managing media on the iPad a tad bit easier recently but I get asked quite a bit about managing media, particularly music on the iPad. I thank Irene Koehler for giving me this idea. Hopefully it helps someone who doesn't understand about syncing music from iTunes to the iPad. I will be honest, with iTunes 11 I have gotten lost myself a few times.

Why developers should focus on iOS

The App Store℠ has over 500 million active accounts

Yesterday Apple released a press statement with some very impressive numbers attached. I am rather impressed at how well Apple has done but I am not surprised in the least. I think this year we will see the 1 millionth application in the app store. Currently that number resides at more than 775,000 app in the App Store.

"The revolutionary App Store offers more than 775,000 apps to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users in 155 countries around the world, with more than 300,000 native iPad apps available. App Store customers can choose from an incredible range of apps in 23 categories, including newspapers and magazines offered in Newsstand, games, business, news, sports, health & fitness and travel."

I wonder if any other "App" store can claim 500,000 active accounts? 500,000 active accounts with credit cards on file? Okay so maybe not 500,000 credit cards but I am assuming most of the 500,000 have credit cards attached to them.

Give the gift of Apps this holiday season

Now you can gift iTunes credit and applications right from the iPad. This feature was removed and recently added back to iOS devices just in time for the holiday season. You can also choose a date in advance to send the App or iTunes Credit, so if you buy today your gift can get delivered on Christmas if you choose December 25th as the day you want the recipient to receive the gift.

This is a great feature and I am really happy Apple has decided to add it back into the iOS App Store. I always send my daughter applications and it is much easier to send these applications right from the iPad vs. having to open iTunes on my computer and send the app.

Restoring your iPad via iTunes

If you need to restore your iPad from a previous backup stored in iTunes the process is very simple. I will keep this short and sweet and hopefully you will be on your way to restoring your iPad in a matter of minutes.

  • Connect your iPad to your computer via the USB cable.

  • Open iTunes on your computer with your iPad connect via the USB cable.

  • In the left panel of iTunes select your iPad, it should be under ‘Devices’.

  • Right click on your device in the left panel, in the dropdown menu select ‘Restore from Backup’.

  • A dialog box will appear with a list of previous backups, choose your backup.

  • With your backup selected press the ‘Restore’ button.

Note:

If you have been backing-up your iPad to iTunes and you restore it from a previous backup, if you did not have ‘Encrypt Local Backup’ checkmarked then your passwords will not be restored. For more information please see this post on Total iPad.

More information can be found on the Apple website.

Sync your saved passwords and encrypt your data

When you backup your iPad or any iOS device that has saved passwords you need to make sure you have "encrypt backup" check marked in iTunes. If you restore from that backup your saved passwords will not sync if you do not have that box checked. I backup my iPad to both iCloud and my Mac via iTunes, I figure it can't hurt to have a backup in multiple places.

To configure your iPad to backup with encryption turned on you will need to do the following:

  • Connect iPad to your computer

  • Open iTunes

  • Select your iPad in the left panel

  • Select the Summary tab (it is default so it should be selected when you launch iTunes)

  • Scroll down to the Backup section

  • Checkmark 'Encrypt local backup'

  • Create a password and verify that password (you can also store in the Keychain if you are on a Mac)

  • Your iPad will now start backing up with your data encrypted

iPad File Sharing

This is a just a quick tip on how to use File Sharing on the iPad via iTunes.  "How do I share files from my iPad or to the iPad?" - I see this question asked a lot on Twitter and on the Apple.com support boards.

File Sharing:

  1. Connect your iPad to your Mac or Windows PC

  2. Open iTunes

  3. Select your iPad in the left panel

  4. Select Apps in the top menu

  5. Scroll down to the 'File Sharing' area

  6. Select your App

  7. Drag and drop your document or file (to or from)

  8. If you are dragging to the iPad, tap sync

You can share any type of file to the iPad, just remember not all applications will support all file types. A great example would be iMovie, you can easily import your videos to iMovie but the video file needs to be the correct file format or iMovie will not recognize it.

The popular news site Huffington Post released a new iPad magazine. Huffington Post boast almost 500 editors who produce between 70 and 80 original reported stories each day. The magazine has some great early reviews, at the time of this posting it has 12 '5 star' and 2 '1 star' ratings in the app store. The magazine also has some built in sharing features enabling you to send stories to Facebook, Twitter and email. You can also share comments on the article you are reading. The application is free to download but to view the content it has in-app purchases for subscriptions. You can subscribe for 1 year for $19.99 or per month for $1.99. Downloading the app will give you 1 free trial issue.

Automatic Downloads

This is more of a general iOS tip rather than just an iPad only tip, since the iPad is the focus of this site I will be using it to demonstrate how to get apps to automatically load onto your iPad. If you own an iPhone or you like browsing the apps store in iTunes on your desktop vs. iTunes on your iPad, you can easily install the apps you download on your computer or another iOS device without the need to sync your iPad. Follow these instructions:

Open Settings > Store > Automatic Downloads > Apps = On

Automatic

Anytime you download an app on your iPhone or download an app in the iTunes store on your computer it will also appear on your iPad if it is able to run on the iPad. A couple things to note though:

  • You must be using the same Apple ID on both devices or signed into same account in iTunes on your computer

  • If you turn automatic downloads on your iPhone, iPad apps will not install on the iPhone of course

  • Some apps may not install over 3G, any App over 50MB has to be downloaded over Wi-Fi
