Day One (Review)

Day One is a journal or diary application for the Mac, iPad and iPhone. It syncs beautifully between devices. It is a universal application for the iOS devices and it cost $1.99 for the iPad/iPhone. The Mac version is a little more expensive it is $9.99 but worth every penny. It offers password protection on both iOS and OSX platforms,   it uses iCloud or Dropbox to syncs notes/entries between devices. In my opinion this is the best journal application in the app store.

Sync your gmail contacts via iTunes to your iPad

I see this question asked a lot on the Apple Support forums. I figured this may help someone searching Google for the answer.

Connect iPad to your computer > open iTunes > select your iPad in the left panel > select info at the top menu in iTunes > check mark "sync contacts" > sync Google contacts > configure > sign in to Google > apply

How to import your Gmail contacts into iCloud

If you are like me and want to use iCloud as your source for your email and contacts but you are currently using Gmail, you can easily import your contact data from Gmail into iCloud in a few easy steps. These instructions are for Mac users, sorry Windows users, I don't use Windows so I am unsure what you need to do. Bing the answer.

Step 1. Open Gmail, make sure you are logged in. Go to the top left of Gmail and you will see a drop down box, choose contacts.

contacts.png

Step 2. Select the contact group you want to export or choose All Contacts. Once you select your contact group you will see all your contacts in the middle of the screen. You need to tick the check mark box to "select all the contacts".
(sorry, I had to filter out my contact names)

filtered.png

Step 3. With all the contacts check marked that you are wanting to export you need to find the "More" button at the top, it is a drop down box, select export. You can export your contacts to anywhere on your computer, I would export them to the desktop for easy access.

export.png

Step 4. Now with your contacts exported > open your Address Book on your Mac > with the address book open > up in the top menu bar on your Mac > next to the Apple logo you will see "File" > Click on file and when the drop down menu opens select "Import".

imported.png

Step 5. Now that your contacts are imported, if you want them to sync between your other devices using iCloud you need to make sure you have iCloud syncing turned on. Click the Apple logo icon in the upper left of your menu bar > System Preferences > Click on iCloud > Check mark "Contacts"

2.png

Step 6. Now if you want to sync another Mac computer just repeat Steps 5, if you want to sync contacts to an iOS device (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) you will need to navigate to the Settings App > iCloud > Contacts move the slider so it displays "ON".

Photo

As a side note you need to make sure you logged into the same iCloud account on all devices using the same Apple ID. If you are using a different Apple ID then the contacts will not sync.

Printing from the iPad

If you own a printer but it does not support AirPrint, I highly recommend you check out Printopia. It is a Mac app (Sorry Windows users) and it works flawlessly for printing from the iPad. Printopia is a virtual printer app that runs on the Mac and your iPad connects to it the same as it would an AirPrint enabled Printer. I have been using it for a week now and I have not had the first problem with it. I have tested from my iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and my new iPad (3rd generation).

System Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 or newer

  • iOS 4.2 or newer

Before you run out and buy a new printer I would recommend you head over to the ecamm website and download the demo. A 7 day trial that may save you a $100+ or more on a new printer when your current printer probably will work running this software.

You can download the demo or purchase the app for $19.99 HERE

How to hard reset your iPad

Need to hard reset your iPad? I will show you how in this video, it is very easy to do. If you do not want to watch the video, you just need to hold down the power button and the home button at the same time, ignore the "slide to unlock" message and continue to hold down both buttons until you see the screen go black and the white Apple logo appear. Once the logo appears you can release both buttons and your iPad is now resetting. You may want to backup to iTunes or iCloud before doing a hard reset just to be safe, but 99.9% of the time it is not needed and you will NOT lose any data.

Fastest way to delete a large number of photos from iPad Camera Roll

Share photos between iPad and iPhone

Last week I posted a video showing you how to beam photos in iPhoto, well everybody does not own the iPhoto app. Today I will show you how to share photos via iCloud and Photo Stream sync on your iPad and iPhone.

Photo Stream

First you are going to need to turn on iCloud on your iPad and iPhone, open the Settings application on your device, once that opens on the left side you will see a list of Settings, tap on iCloud. If iCloud is turned off or you have not set up iCloud you will need to do so. iCloud is free to use on any iOS device that is running iOS 5 or later, Apple gives each free iCloud account 5GB of storage. You can also purchase additional storage if you feel you need more storage on your device.

icloud

With iCloud turned on you will need to tap on the Photo Stream tab and when it opens you will need to slide the button to the right to turn Photo Stream "ON".

After you have turned Photo Stream on, navigate to the Settings menu on the left and slide down a little bit until you see the Photos option, select that. With that open you will see another option to turn on Photo Stream. Slide that to the right so that it is "ON".

photostream

After you have your iPad set up you will now need to do the same on your other iOS device (iPhone/iPod Touch/another iPad).

iphone

Photo Stream ON

Once you have this set up, photo you take will automatically appear in your Photo Stream tab section of your Photos app. You will also see this appear in other applications that have access to the photos on your device. A few things to note, Photo Stream only allows up to 1000 photos. After 1000 photos the oldest photos are replaced by the newest photos. This does not delete the photo off of the original device, they still will still appear in your Camera Roll on your iPhone or your Photos tab on your iPad.

Weather Live (Review)

Weather live is a universal application for iPad and iPhone, it is $0.99 in the iTunes App Store. It has an awesome live wallpaper of the current weather outside, you can open the app and set it to stay on and use your iPad or iPhone as a bedside clock. You can try the application for free but the free version limits you to 1 location and will also display a banner advertisement at the bottom of the app, you can then purchase the "Pro" version and it will remove the ads as well as open it up for more locations. You can set up different widgets in the app in the settings menu of the application. This app also has a neat little feature that allows you to turn the badge icon on and it will display the current weather on the badge icon.

One downside or annoyance with this app is the popup "please rate" and "download my other apps" that appear randomly in the paid version, I rated this 3 stars in the app store because of that. If I pay for an app do not give me more ads that I paid to remove, that is a no-no for me! Other than that, the application is beautifully designed and I do recommend it.

You can download the app here: Weather Live - Apalon

Remove your Twitter account from iOS

Some people are having  a problem with deleting the Twitter app on an iPad or iPhone but they are still logged into Twitter. WIth iOS, Twitter is now integrated. So you must delete your account in the Settings app.

Downloading files in Safari on the iPad

To download a file in Safari you will need a 3rd party application to download it to as well as unzip it if it is a zipped file, in this video I am using GoodReader for iPad by Good.iWare Ltd.. Simply click on the download link, wait for the file to download in Safari, once it has downloaded you will be prompted to choose to "Open In" or as seen in this video "Open in Good Reader". Please note that you must already have Good Reader open (or whatever application you are using), I have noticed that if you select an application that is not open in the dock Safari seems to crash, even though the application is not technically open as it is suspended in the dock, this still happens a lot, or at least it did for me when choosing Good Reader. Other applications may not have this problem though, maybe it was the file type? Either way, this is a quick tip to help those that may not have realized this was possible. Another thing to note is this does not work with torrents, and you can only open files that the 3rd party app you selected supports.

Targus - Citygear Mini (Review)

I have been using this Targus bag for about a month now, it is a messenger style iPad bag made of Nylon. This is a great, inexpensive day to day bag. I do recommend it if you want something durable as a second messenger bag. It is probably not ideal as a main messenger bag do to the comfort of it and it is nylon so the design is not the greatest, but this is all opinion, I prefer leather myself.

It has quite a few different storage compartments and plenty of room to store more than just your iPad. A netbook would fit in this case along with your iPad if you needed to carry both.

Dimensions of the bag:

Interior - 10.62" x 1.5" X 7.52"

Exterior - 10.75" x 3.8" x 8.75"

Targus

The strap on the bag is decent length, I measured it at about 4ft. long. The shoulder pad is not very padded and it may be uncomfortable after a while, but the bag does have a carrying handle on the top of it so if it starts to get heavy or rub against your neck you can carry the bag as well.

Targus

The compartment on the front has a couple of slots for either pens or maybe a stylus. It also features a compartment for your iPhone as well as another slot for cables or maybe your camera connection kit. Be aware though this open slot is not ideal, I noticed that if you tip the bag upside down or sideways you may risk losing any of your items that are in there, it is probably more ideal for a cable or two.

Targus

I found the iPhone compartment to be very snug as well, my iPhone only has a bumper cover on it and it barely fit in the slot. If you have a case on your iPhone you may find that it will not fit into the phone storage area. Also, if you have a larger phone such as an Android phone that will most likely not fit either since they tend to have larger screens and are wider phones.

Targus

On the front of the bag there is another pouch with a zipper that is more ideal for your camera connection kit or Square adapter. There is not a lot of room in this front pouch but it will fit the camera kit and Square card reader nicely, the Apple headphones will fit in there also.

Targus

Will 2 iPads fit? Yes they will, matter of fact I was able to fit 3 iPads in this bag. It was snug but I fit my iPad 1, iPad 2 and new iPad (3) all in this case. There is only one slot that is designed for the iPad, it is a padded compartment and is designed to protect the iPad against scratches and bumps. The divide in the bag allows for storage of other items or a netbook, but if you have more than one iPad it will fit nicely in there. The padded compartment fits the iPad nicely with the Smart Cover on it, I am not sure about a case on the iPad though. It may fit depending on the case and how thick it is, but you might have to work it in there as the iPad is pretty snug with just the Smart Cover.

Targus

On the back of the bag there is another pouch that seals with velcro, this is probably an ideal place for more cables or maybe even the 10w iPad charger. You could keep it in the front pouch or the empty slot in the area where I was putting my other iPads. But this feels like an ideal slot for it.

Targus

Last but not least, the keyboard. Yes I was able to fit my Apple bluetooth keyboard into the bag although it was not an ideal fit, it does fit in there but barely, it was very snug.

Keyboard

Overall I am happy with this as a second bag, I can see myself using this in many different situations such as going to the beach or if it is raining outside. I would rather bring this bag since it is nylon and it will not get ruined if it gets a few raindrops on it. It is a very inexpensive bag, I paid $30 for it so I can be a little rougher than normal with it and save my main iPad bag for more professional situations or when I go on vacation. This is a great day to day bag that I can put all the wear and tear I want on it.

Beam photos in iPhoto

OSX Daily had a very handy tip today about using iPhoto to beam an image from one iOS device to another iOS device. I just wanted to follow up that post with a video demonstration of beaming a photo from one device to another. I also wanted to mention that when you make edits to a photo in iPhoto and then beam them to another iOS device your edited photo will also be beamed as well as the finished photo which is placed in your "Beamed" album. If you open the edited album you can revert the edited image back to the original unedited image. If you are using PhotoStream to send photos from device to device you only get the finished image.
