Conservative Talk Radio (review)

Rating: 4 out of 5

The name says it all.  When Chris first mentioned this app to me, I
thought, "Ermegerd, flashbacks and hot flashes!"  I spent 17 years
driving almost 1.7 million miles as a truck driver and the last thing
I wanted to do was review a talk radio app.  I spent most of those 1.7
million miles listening to talk radio and I lived with the frustration
of going in and out of AM radio station coverage, AM night signal
fading, being in syndicated markets and trying to find the station
listings for my favorite talk radio shows, and so forth.  XM Radio
made things better, but it left large gaps, like Rush Limbaugh, who
wasn't contracted with XM Radio.
So, then came the web and radio stations took to the web.  It should
have got better, but it really didn't because they wanted you to sign
up for all sorts of crap, java plug-ins, ect., ect.  It was and is
just a hellacious user experience.

So, what is the solution for some good conservative talk radio access?
The Conservative Talk Radio app is absolutely bad to the bone.
Why?  Because it's stupid simple and it simply works.

If you have a 3G iPad or a hotspot from a cell company, I imagine you
can simply listen to CTR anywhere and at anytime.  When you open
the app, it is automatic and instantly works with the last radio
station you had selected; for me that is WSB AM 750 in the ATL.  I
enjoyed this station when I drove and it was the little bit of joy I
had when I was in the ATL area.  When I say instantly, I mean
instantly.

The big advantage to CTR is it's simplicity.  When you open the app,
all the available personalities are on the left side and when you get
to the bottom of the list of personalities you will find a continued
list of radio stations which generally have conservative formats.

They cover everybody from William Bennett, to Neal Boortz (my personal
favorite), Laura Ingraham (who I can't bear), Hayworth, Limbaugh,
Beck, Alex Jones, Sekulow, Medved, Hannity (arghh), Jason Lewis (never
heard of the guy, Mark Levin, Hedgecock, Savage, Dennis Mill (I forgot
he had a show), Prager, *And then* a list of all of these folks "best
of" shows, when applicable.

The radio stations are the hard core conservative flag ships of the
country and then a couple "networks," such as the "Sons of Liberty"
network and the "Red State Radio" network.

If I could suggest another station, it would be WLW 700 out of
Cincinnati, which is essentially the Fox News of Talk Radio! Other
than that, if I could suggest improvement, it would be the ability to
order the stations as you wish.  Currently, there are no settings
whatsoever and that's why I gave it a 4 out of 5.

Sumo.FM for iPad (review)

Sumo.FM is a terrific art application for the iPad. I am not a very artistic individual but I do love to doodle on my iPad from time to time. I own quite a few 'art' apps on my iPad and most of those apps are more expensive or include a ton of in-app purchases that force me to pay a lot more money to unlock the full app. WIth Sumo.FM you pay $1.99 and you get the full application. In-app purchases may come at a later date, I have no knowledge of that but as it stands now you pay 1 time and unlock the full application. For a full demonstration of Sumo.FM please watch the video above.

Sumo.FM supports full Retina resolution so your creations look beautiful on the 3rd generation iPad. Sumo.FM features a ton of artistic brushes that require no drawing skill at all, setup your brushes and begin creating what you envision. For further proof that I have no artistic skill or the fact that you do not need artistic skill to create a masterpiece check out my gallery below that features a few of my creations.

Sumo.FM features a full color palette that allows you to choose a full range of colors for your different brushes. The app also features 40 brushes that allows you to adjust the settings for each brush or use the preset brushes. The adjustments you can make to each brush is as follows:

  • Spacing

  • Angle

  • Auto Orient

  • Auto Size

  • Gravity

  • Scattering

  • Angle

  • Size

You may also adjust the size of the brush from 0%-100% for the thickness and the opacity of the ink from 0%-100%. You can also choose to multiply your brush from 1 to 32, what I mean by multiply for example is if you choose the 'foot' brush and have it set to 5, when you paint you will get 5 'feetprint' on screen instead of 1 footprint.

Sumo.Fm is built with studio-grade OpenGL® based Sumoing™ Painting Engine.

New Featured Brushes:

  • + Zebra Brush - The stroke is filled with black and white stripes of variable size

  • + DNA - keeps rotating infinitely like a DNA sequence

  • + Color Circus - Fills the stroke with endless stream of random colors

  • + Smoke - Emulates the appearance of thin and soft smoke

  • + Balloons - Blows a continuous stream of smooth and round balloons

Total iPad Interview - Derek Ross

I sat down this past week with Derrick Ross of Android Authority and Jennifer Ruggiero my co-host on Total iPad and we discussed the Nexus 7 tablet. It seems Android has finally caught up to iOS in user experience as far as scrolling and smoothness of the UI is concerned thanks to Jelly Bean. I will admit I am also intrigued with the smaller form factor and currently the iPad 'Air' is only a rumor at the moment. I do currently have 2 Android devices in my possession and I have owned several other devices as well, 6 in total. Even though I am a proud iPad owner I will be dammed if Derrick didn't make me want to buy a Nexus 7 by the end of the show.

I started out wanting to compare the iPad to the Nexus 7, but even as Derek points out during the conversation they seem to be 2 different devices and probably not a good comparison. So the conversation was mostly about the Nexus 7 which was perfectly fine with me, I am an iPad guy but I am also intrigued by other devices as well. I hope this discussion will help those on the ropes about which tablet to buy and even though we don't go into great detail about the iPad, I have an entire site dedicated to just about everything there is to know about the iPad. So listen to the discussion and when you are done if you decide the Nexus 7 is not right for you then check out Total iPad for everything you could ever want to know about the iPad.

I would like to thank Derek for taking the time to join Jennifer and I, if you are looking for more great Android discussion and links then you should circle Derek on his Google+ Profile.

You can also circle Jennifer and I on Google+ as well:

FaceTime camera-in-camera

This is a terrific tip for the iPad, it comes from Ben Lloyd.

When using FaceTime on the iPad or iPhone, you can move the camera-in-camera window to any of the corners of your screen. So if the person you are calling is hidden by the feed from your camera, just tap-n-drag the little window to one of the other corners and you can then view the other person unhindered.

I thank Ben for this awesome tip, you can also find Ben on Twitter and Google+.

Fox News - You Decide (review)

This is a big app, but a simple app. What do you mean, Wilson? Well, it's a map; that's the simple part. You can essentially make up your own Red State vs. Blue State map where you mark up what you think will be the 2012 election results. I guess for some, it's fun to guess up what you think will happen and then after the election go back to see where you were right and wrong.

The complex part is you can share your maps to facebook, Twitter (with @'ing @KarlRove and @JoeTrippi, FN contributors), and via e-mail.

Also, you can see the predictions of Karl Rove and Joe Trippi by selecting their profile and then you can compare your brains with theirs.

What I did was first make my own map. I was doing it off memory and evidently, my memory sucks. I tried to just think how the people of various states would vote based on my prior experience. I got a lot right, but historically speaking, I got a lot wrong, too.

It is interesting to be able to compare yourself with history and the professional pundits, like Rove and Trippi.

Other than that, this is the extent of the app. It's basically like playing Fantasy Politics instead of Fantasy Baseball.

I rate this app 4/5. The reason why I gave it 4 instead of 3 was the "fantasy" side of the game. It is, after all, a simplified game, in a way. The reason I didn't give it a 5 is the lack of more social media services.

Road Inc. - Legendary Cars (review)

Road Inc. - Legendary Cars by Pyrolia1 is an interactive anthology of classic cars designed specifically for the iPad. This is a beautiful application for the iPad, if you are a classic car enthusiast and you are wanting a highly detailed and interactive application for your iPad then look not further.

Road Inc. includes 50 automobiles, 50 detailed fact sheets, 200 pages of original writing, 500 photographs, 180 press cuttings, 40 maintenance manuals and 75 video extracts. When I say this app is highly detailed I mean it, there is a ton of information in this application that will keep you busy for weeks at a time. This application is presented with stunning 3D models and illustrations, it also includes over 50 soundtracks to make your viewing of these awesome cars more enjoyable.

I want to note a couple of things, with all the information that this app comes with you will need to be careful with downloading too many vehicles at once in the app. The downloads take about 1-2 minutes with each of the downloads including data such as the engine sounds, manuals, photos, spec sheets, advertisements, yearbooks, blueprints and more. That is nice but if you do not have much space on your iPad it will start to use up valuable storage space on your iPad, so just be cautious with downloading too many vehicles at once. You can always download 1 car, read over the info then delete that vehicle and download another. If you delete a vehicle you always have the option of re-downloading that vehicle at a later date. Manage your storage wisely.

Honestly this feel more like an interactive digital book rather than an app. That is a good thing though because you are getting your money's worth with everything that comes with this app. The apps UI is a little funny to navigate with at first but if you tap the '?' icon in the top right of the app and read how the navigation settings work you will start to get the hang of it. There are a ton of little 'dots' all over the app that when you tap on them reveal more information about the vehicles such as images and videos. So if you take the time to read the 'how to' for the app you will begin to enjoy the fact that all these little details are hidden for a reason and the interface is designed beautifully as it allows the images or content on screen to remain the focal point.

Watch my demo video above to get a better feel for everything this app features. After you watch the video head over to the App Store and download Road Inc. I am sure you will enjoy this app as much as I have.

Features:

  • 50 landmark automobile models to unveil and explore, from the Ford T to the Bugatti Veyron.

  • An interactive 3D museum tour allowing to explore every single angle of 50 road icons.

  • Over 3,000 Archival documents including brochures, yearbooks, blueprints, adverts, plans, press articles and more...

  • Over 70 videos including race archives, interviews, commercials and more...

  • More than 350 high definition studio photographs from the most acclaimed automotive photographers

  • More than 100 roaring engine sounds for the full experience

  • Over 350 pages of original in-depth feature essays

  • AirPlay support for videos, music & engine sounds(streams audio directly to your Hi-Fi speakers or Apple TV)

  • Social content-sharing features (Facebook, Twitter, email)

Haiku Deck

Haiku Deck by Giant Thinkwell is a terrific new application for the iPad that allows you to create beautiful keynote presentations. I first discovered Haiku Deck on Google+ in a post by Robert Scoble. I went and downloaded the application and was immediately happy I did. This is a great new application and could possibly replace Keynote for me on my iPad.

The app allows you to search the web for beautiful hi-res creative commons images using keywords or you can log in and insert photos from Facebook, Flickr, Instagram or Picasa. You can also insert images stored on your iPad in the camera roll if you give the app permission to access your location services. The app features 5 free themes to use for creating your presentation, each of the themes will also apply an image filter to the background photo but that can be toggled on or off. The text on the presentation can be adjusted to different positions on the presentation and you can add a title plus tagline to each slide.

There are also several in-app purchases available for this application. The IAP are for new themes that you can use with each slide, they are $1.99 individually or you can purchase the entire theme pack for $14.99. There are 11 themes in total that can be purchased. While the app is free to use the in-app purchases help support the developer to continue developing this application. If you enjoy the app I encourage you to show your support and purchase a couple of the themes.

Haiku Deck is a terrific presentation application for the iPad, please watch my demo video of Haiku Deck and then go download it for yourself. I have a feeling you will be happy with this application, it is very well done and I look forward to new features that will come to this application in the future.

Features:

  • Import photos from Flickr, Picasa, Instagram, Facebook or the camera roll on your iPad

  • Apply filters to background images

  • several different fonts that change with theme selected

  • Share via Facebook, Twitter or email

Techwebcast - Talking iPad

This past Saturday I appeared on Techwebcast to talk about the iPad and the Total iPad podcast. I was a little under the weather that night but I enjoyed myself. There were a couple of other guest on the show including Bily Foster from the podcast That iPad Guy. Yes, his name is spelled with one 'L'.

We talked about some of our favorite iPad apps, Youtube getting removed from iOS, a little bit about running this podcast as well a few other tech related topics including a guy who order a t.v. from Amazon and got an assault rifle in the mail instead.

Goodnight iPad

My daughter used to love Goodnight Moon. Now there is a parody book for kids entitled Goodnight iPad. I have not bought it yet but I am thinking of getting this for my daughter as a gag gift since she loves her iPad and used to love Goodnight Moon. It seems to be  a decent child's book also, 45 out of 58 reviews have '5 stars' on Amazon.

One of the reviews on Amazon about the book:
The story line and the graphics mimic the original to a tee. Love the current jargon and techno savvy commentary. Wonderfully executed. Had to purchase it for my grandson, but I feel his Mom & Dad, (software & electrical engineers) are going to love it too. "Goodnight Moon" was my son's favorite and he reads it so often to his own son. This will make a great Christmas gift for all on your list!

The Fancy

The Fancy is a social shopping site which is often compared to Pinterest and rightfully so. I prefer The Fancy over Pinterest though, I like the site layout better and the iPad app is just gorgeous. The iPad app allows you to share via Facebook, Twitter and email. You can also use your address book, Facebook friends or Twitter followers to find and follow others on The Fancy.

If you are looking for a fun way to browse gadget ideas or stylish clothes and household items then you should check out The Fancy. You can signup free for The Fancy here.

  • Fancy is for curators of style. It's part blog, part magazine and part bookmarking tool.

  • It's a place to share and discover great stuff, to curate a collection of things that define your style, to create a museum of Me.

  • We built it because we love to show off the things we have and to window-shop for things we admire.

My most used iPad apps

Below is a list of the applications that I use almost everyday and how I use them on my iPad.  I use other applications but these are the apps that I have come to know and love.

The Apps

GoodReader for iPad - Good.iWare Ltd.  -  I use GoodReader for so many different things on my iPad. GoodReader is like a Swiss Army Knife of applications, I probably use it most for transferring documents from my Mac to my iPad so I can use my iPad as an external storage device. I also use it as an FTP client on my iPad so I can download and mange documents I have stored on a hosting server that I use as a backup.

Downcast - Jamawkinaw Enterprises - This is my favorite podcast application on my iPad. I listen to a lot of podcast and Downcast is my favorite way to do it. I prefer Downcast over Instacast because it has a lot more sharing features and it is easier to navigate and find things about the podcast I am listening to.

Quicklytics - Google Analytics App - ESCOZ inc. - I have several websites and with each website I have setup my site to use Google Analytics so I can gather information about who is using my site, how long they are on the site, what country they are from, etc. Quicklytics shows me the same information that I could get on Google.com/analytics but in a native app on my iPad. One of my favorite features is the 'real-time' which allows me see up to the minute stats about page views and visitors.

Day One (Journal/Diary) - Bloom Built, LLC - If you have ever listened to any of my podcast or if you follow me on Google+ you will already know how much I love Day One. After a recent update to the application it is by far my single most favorite application. Yes, it is a journal application, but I use it for so many other things and not just on my iPad but also on my Mac. If you have a chance check out some of the hacks by Brett Terpstra which can be found here and here. You can also check out the tools section on the Day One website. (Please note that these extras are for the Mac version of Day One.)

Mr. Reader - OliverŸ - This is the best way to read RSS feeds via Google Reader. I also use Reeder on my iPad but I prefer Mr. Reader because it has so many more options for sharing, especially to Twitter if you have multiple accounts you can switch and tweet to any account you choose to. Also you can use multiple Google accounts.

Instapaper - Marco Arment - I use Instapaper as a bookmarking service more than a read later service. When I do my weekly "News" links on Total iPad almost all the links are saved during the week via Instapaper. I save links each day that I find throughout the day and then move them into my 'iPad' folder at night before I go to bed. Then on the weekend when I post my news article to Total iPad I will open up Instapaper navigate to my iPad folder and copy the links to the articles.

Tweetbot€” A Twitter Client with Personality for iPad - Tapbots - Ask any iPhone or iPad user what the best Twitter client on iOS is and I would bet probably 8 out of 10 would say Tweetbot. Well, you do not have to go ask 10 people, you can take my word for it that it is the best way to use Twitter on your iPad!

30/30 - Binary Hammer - This is nothing more than a timer app on your iPad but I use it daily for things such as making my coffee, exercising in my living room and of course when I do my Total iPad podcast I set up timers so that I don't spend too long on one particular topic.  Of course I always go over the limits I set on the podcast but having the timer there helps remember that I should start wrapping things up.

OmniFocus for iPad - The Omni Group -  All you need to know and learn about this app is GTD.

Blogsy - Fomola - Quite simply the best way to manage a blog and upload new content to it from the iPad. If you have a Wordpress blog or a Tumblr blog and you are using an iPad then you will want this app so that you can post new topics to your blog from your iPad. I use Blogsy several times a week to post to my Tumblr blog as well as the occasional post here on Total iPad. It is a great way to blog on the iPad when you are away from home.

If you have any questions about any of these apps feel free to contact me on Twitter  @iCrizzo

Seven Poets and the Assassin's Secret

A terrific new concept for an application on the iPad, this is a real time storybook. Seven Poets is currently free and you currently get two parts of the story’s prologue and after August 18th you can continue unlocking new chapters for $0.99 via an In App Purchase. New chapters will be released each week.

Most of the events will factor around real events although the story will be fiction. Currently it is aimed at the 2012 Olympic games in London. In order to unlock 'Challenges' or complete 'Your Story' you must read the 'Chapters', there is also a 'Newsroom' section to keep you update to on the happenings from that day.

It seems to be a fun idea for an app, not sure how long I will stick around with it but it is absolutely worth the free download to see if this is something you might be interested in supporting over the long haul. Check out the YouTube video.

On August 12, 2012 the world is forever changed by a devastating terrorist attack at the London Olympics. Seven Poets and the Assassin's Secret is the story of seven children's escape from the terrorists behind the attack, and their flight to new lives filled with mystery, danger, and adventure.

Features:

  • Chapters are released as the story unfolds in near real-time

  • The Broadside, a fictional paper from the world of the story provides a different perspective with new articles daily

  • Special guest essays and editorials within the newsroom

  • Challenges you can complete to unlock bonus content

  • Your Story section that marks your progress through the challenges

  • Adventure

Creating folders in iCloud

Creating folders for your iCloud documents is a very simple task, all you need to do is open an application on either your iOS device or your Mac that is using iCloud. It also needs to be an application that allows you to create documents. All the iWork applications on the iPad allow you to create folders. An example of an iWork application would be Pages by Apple.

How to:

  • Open Pages on your iPad

  • When it launches you will see your all your files

  • Drag one of the files on top of another file

  • It will now create a folder

  • You can rename that folder if you like

If you have Pages on your Mac you can create folders the exact same way. Just drag a document on top of another document at the launch screen. The folders will appear on all your devices that are linked to that iCloud account.

If you open icloud.com in your browser and navigate to the iWork section you will see the folders there as well.

Top iPad Stories (July 30 - August 5)

As has been the case for the last month or so the iPad 'mini' rumors are running rampant. We also learned that Apple has really thought about a smaller iPad for a while now as reports have surfaced that Eddie Cue has continually pushed for a smaller iPad. The iPad is the still the most dominant tablet on the market although it is losing some of its market share due to all the other options now available. The iPad 2 still makes up 60% of the iPad web traffic in the U.S. I also have some great links for developers or those who are interested in getting started with developing. If you interested in learning about developing for the iPad be sure to check out the 'Try iOS' link. I also some great reviews, tips and my app pick of the week.

Where's My Perry

Where's My Perry is a fun physics-based puzzle game for the iPad, it is a Disney game from the makers of Where's My Water? Where's my Perry stars Agent P from the hit Disney T.V. show Phineas and Ferb.

You can connect Where's My Perry to your Facebook account to share and compare your scores, Like levels or post screenshots of the game on your Facebook wall for your friends and family to see. Where's My Perry also uses Game Center and iCloud so you can bring your profile and stats to other iOS devices that are using the same Apple ID for iCloud.

I originally bought this game for my daughter but after playing it with her for about 30 minutes I found myself really into the game, the puzzles got harder as I advanced and a few of them really made me think. It is a great game and if you are looking for something to do to pass time I highly recommend you checking it out.

10 great iPad RSS feed reader apps

I love reading news on my iPad, Mr. Reader is probably the single most used application on my iPad. Some people claim RSS is dead but I disagree, without RSS feeds popular application like Flipboard or great podcast applications like Downcast or Instacast would not exist. Honestly I think Flipboard saved RSS if anything, yes it was dying and Flipboard brought it back to life, so to speak. Now there are a ton of apps that try to mimic what Flipboard does on the iPad. While Flipboard is a wonderful app that I use every day it is not my favorite RSS reader, that is a toss up between Mr. Reeder or Reeder.

I put together a list of the 10 best RSS news apps on the iPad. 5 paid and 5 free apps. Try all the free apps to find what will serve your needs or choose wisely and pick one of the paid applications. All of the applications use Google Reader, they also include social sharing so you can read links and share with your friends on Twitter, Facebook and a few other places.

Reeder for iPad - Silvio Rizzi

Free Apps

Zite Personalized Magazine - Zite, Inc.

Pulse News for iPad - Alphonso Labs Inc

feedly - DevHD

Episode 21 - Mini Me

Tonight on Total iPad I was joined by Jennifer Ruggiero and we discuss the iPad mini rumors, once again. Looks like a smaller iPad or a larger iPod Touch is going to happen and probably on September 12th. I talk about the papernomad case I reviewed this past week, what a terrific case. Make sure you read my review on Total iPad. Note applications, I talk about 2 of my favorite applications and some of the pros and cons of them. Last but not least my iPad tip for the week.

Jennifer is going to be a regular co-host on Total iPad each week. Total iPad will now be recorded every Wednesday evening, if you are not subscribed yet be sure to do so in iTunes. You can also listen to the weekly Total iPad podcast on Stitcher Radio

Other data on your iPad

Have you ever connected your iPad to your computer and wondered what the 'Other' space was?

Other

If you sync a lot of documents to applications like GoodReader, DragNSync, or anything other application that reads external files, your storage use on your iPad will increase.

You can remove some of your data on your iPad by doing the following:

  1. Open Settings >

  2. General >

  3. Usage > Tap the button labeled 'Show All Apps'

You will now see the name of each application installed on your iPad and how much storage space that application is using. If you tap on the application name you will get additional information such as the version number, the total amount of storage the application is using as well as how much storage space is being used by the applications 'Documents & Data'.

Data

From this screen you can delete the application and remove all of the data on the iPad that might be using up valuable storage space or you can open the application and remove some of the data stored within the application. You will notice in the screen shot above Instatcast is only 5.4MB but the application is actually using up 2.7GB of storage space on my iPad. I could open up Instacast and delete some of the podcast that I have downloaded in the application and it would give me back some of my storage space on my iPad.

After you delete some of the data on your iPad if a large amount of 'Other' data remains that means that a file or data on the iPad  is most likely corrupt. To remove that corrupt data you would need to backup your iPad and then do a complete restore of your iPad. After the restore you can recover all your data from your previous backup. For instructions on how to backup and restore your iPad via iCloud please see this article.

iPad desk Flickr group

I recently opened up a Flickr account again, I have decided I wanted to try and start a Total iPad Group for desk. I enjoy looking at how others use their iPad and the workspaces they use them in. I am hoping to build up a nice following for the group. If I get enough submissions I may post a weekly thread here on Total iPad showing off either all the submission or maybe my favorite submissions.

If you would like to submit photos of your iPad Desk, email the photos to me at total.ipad@yahoo.com. If you do submit a photo to the group please keep the photo original, no Instagram filters etc. Also include a link to either your website, Twitter, Facebook or anywhere you would like me to link your pictures to. Do not send affiliate links or links to buy items, I will reject all submissions that contain any of those types of links.
